The Social Capital and Empowerment of Rice Farmers Group in Kuok District, Kampar Regency, Riau

Abstract


The aim of this study was to identify social capital, empowerment and the correlation between social capital and empowerment in rice farmers' group in Kuok Sub-District, Kampar, Riau by using the indicators of social capital and empowerment. This research was conducted by survey method in 66 members of rice farmers' group as respondents which were selected by a purposive sampling method. The data were analyzed by using descriptive analysis and graph the percentage of votes statements method. The results showed that the statement value of the social capital from beginner class farmer groups were 13 (34.21%), advanced class farmer groups were 21 (52.63%), and intermediate class farmer groups were 32 (84.21%). The stated value of empowerment for beginner class farmer groups were 4 (33.33%); advanced class farmer groups were 6 (50.00%) and intermediate class farmer groups were 10 (83.33%). Therefore, the social capital of rice farmers' group is directly proportional with the empowerment of three rice farmers' group in Kuok Sub-district, namely 34.21%;33.33% for a beginner class, 52.63%;50.00% for an advanced class and 84.21%;83.33% for the intermediate class. The author suggests to all members of rice farmers' group to more improve the social capital and empowerment of rice farmers' group.
